FINAL BLOG!

FINAL EXAM

For the final exam, I was part of the green group. We met outside of the College Center and everyone in the class brought a few friends to participate. This class was probably one of my favorites because even though it was our final exam, it was a lot of fun! We all participated in taking pictures and videos using sight, sound and motion. I loved how my friends got involved and we all had a great time. Also, the weather was GORGEOUS, so overall it was a wonderful experience. In addition to all of the fun I had, I learned a lot. I worked with my team to articulate sounds, motion and sight for people to take pictures and videos of us. We did a great job as a team!

SIGHT

Image One
Opinion:
I like this picture because the color of the trees and grass in the background are bright and cheerful. I also like this picture because as the people are bent over, the height of the people go in order from the tallest to the shortest.
Vulcan:
In this image, there are six people tilted forward with their heads faced down to the ground. The second person to the left has a head covered in white and the fourth person to the left has a yellow and grey colored head. All of the people are wearing a red top except for the last person on the left. She is wearing all black. Four of the people have bare legs and two people's legs are covered in blue or black. The ground that the people are standing on is grey with small squares making a pattern within the grey. To the right, behind the people there is a thick vertical line of brown with different shades of green at the top. Behind the grey ground in the background, the ground is bright green.

 Image Two
Opinion
I also like this picture because of the bright greens in the background. The people are kneeling with their heads resting on a fist and it is a humorous pose.
Vulcan
There are six people in this photo crouched down resting on one knee. The other knee is propped up and they are all resting one elbow on the propped up knee. Their heads are resting on their hands which is made into a fist. All of the people in this picture are wearing red and the girl at the far right is wearing a shade of pink. Her height is smaller than the rest of the people in the picture. The ground that the people are kneeling on is grey with small squares making a pattern within the grey. To the right, behind the people there is a thick vertical line of brown with different shades of green at the top. Behind the grey ground in the background, the ground is bright green.

 Image Three
Opinion
In this picture, six people are standing spelling out the world "LOYOLA" with their arms. I think this is very funny to look at and a creative way to spell our school's name.
Vulcan
There are six people standing in a straight line. They are all wearing green shirts with bare legs. The first person to the left is wearing a white bottom. Her right arm is vertically straight and her left arm is horizontally straight. The person to the right is wearing blue bottoms and her arms meet above her head making a circular shape. The person to the right of her, is wearing a floral bottom and her arms are above her head and create a "U" shape. The boy to her left is wearing plaid bottoms and his hands meet above his head making a circular shape. The second to last person's right arm is vertically straight and her left arm is horizontally straight. The last person on the right has white bottoms, and his arms meet about his head. His hands make a pointy shape. The ground that the people are standing on is grey with small squares making a pattern within the grey. To the right, behind the people there is a thick vertical line of brown with different shades of green at the top. Behind the grey ground in the background, the ground is bright green.

Image Four
Opinion
This picture is interesting because it is of just peoples legs and feet meeting together. All of their toes are bare and showing. This is a cool way to portray people's feet.
Vulcan
Five different legs and feet meet together and create a semi-circle shape. All of the toes are bare. Everyone's shoes are brown except for the foot on the left. Also, all of the legs are bare except for the leg on the left which is covered in blue, and the leg on the right which is covered in black. The ground the feet rest on is grey with small squares creating a pattern within the grey. At the back left of the photo, there is a small area of bright green.

Image Five
Opinion
I like this picture because it is very plain and simple except in the background there are a pair of orange rain boots. It's a cool image because the orange jumps out.
Vulcan:
The bottom half of this image is all grey with small squares creating a pattern within the grey. The top half of the photo is bright green with a stub of a darker green branching vertically out of the picture. To the right of the stub, there are two thin objects. They are both vertical and the bottom half of the object is orange, and the top half is navy blue.

SOUND

MOTION

Motion One
Motion:
In this clip, two people meet together, slap hands in front of each other, and slap hands behind. After they slap hands twice, they walk directly away from each other. This motion occurs four times which includes eight different people. Each motion of the slapping of the hands is quick and fast.

Motion Two

Motion:
First a person dances forward in a steady but slow pace. He puts one put in front of the other while snapping his fingers with a beat. The next person walks forward while turning her hands in circular motion and then stopping to put one arm out at a time. The next person dances forward and moves his legs, one a time, to the side, while opening and closing his jacket. When he finished dancing forward, he jumps up and brings his legs together. Next a person walks back and then skips forward while waving her arms in the air. Another person  dances forward slowly and puts her hand in a fist and moves them around. Her legs are bent. The final person takes his hands and pumps them up and down.

Class Reflection 4/7/11

RECAP:
Today in class we did a second exam! Yet again, it wasn't a typical in-class test. We weren't even in the classroom and we met outside of the College Center. We all negotiated and "flipped a coin" to decide how many pictures and videos we would have to take. After some deliberating, Doc gave us around a half hour to take pictures and videos around campus of "sight, sound, and motion." We each were assigned to take five pictures and two videos, and those without cameras were told to tag along with someone that did have one.  It was fun to be able to go about on my own and choose what images I wanted to take. I took pictures that I thought would be ideal to analyze in "vulcan style." Next, we all talked about upcoming classes and events. Next class Doc decided that it would be outside again which is awesome! He asked us to bring as many friends as possible to class so we can teach them about sight, sound, and motion. Hopefully I can get some of my friends to agree! We also talked about going to a LIVE baseball game (Orioles?!?) to witness sight, sound, and motion. Nothing was ever finalized but I'm definitely crossing my fingers that it works out!

Today I learned a lot about how to brainstorm my class reflections and improve my writing. Doc stated that we have improved since the first reflection we have ever done in this class and it's relieving to hear that. He also posted in the "Doc" section of the Facebook group about how to elongate reflection posts so I have been referring to that as well.

During Doc's court trials I learned more about how sight, sound, and motion was used to conduct his trials. The video camera he uses is not just for decoration but it preserves the sight, sound, and motion. It's also helpful to see what other student's are doing in class and out of class for the homework because it serves as an example of what I need to live up to.

Although my team Shine didn't exactly work together, we all recorded videos and took pictures that we will be able to share with each other. We all put our best effort into these pictures and videos to ensure all of us will get the best images for our homework. Although we weren't doing the assignment together, in the end we will end up helping out each other.

Today I feel that I was very productive and took pictures that will really make my homework stand out. They are colorful and detailed which will make the vulcanized analysis interesting and educational. I really put a lot of thought into each picture.

The assignment today as a whole was productive as well and the class was enthusiastic and worked well together. Doc Chris also was very enthusiastic and encouraged us along the way which was very helpful! It was a very interesting class because we were able to do hands-on activities rather than sitting behind a computer and reading out of a text book.

Next time, I can't wait to be outside again!

Class Reflection 3/31/11

Today class started slightly early and we had to come at 4:30.. Doc Chris came at 5!! should we put him on trial?? :)

We had an exam today but it wasn't a typical exam.. we travelled upstairs to Boulder with our cell phones and took videos and pictures of our surroundings using sight, sound and motion. It was so awesome to have such a hands-on test. People eating in Boulder were very curious as to what we were doing and I could tell they were VERY envious that we were taking an exam.. I bet no other professor gives an exam like the one we had to take!

From this experience learned how to apply sight, sound and motion to real life situations!

Class Reflection 3/24/11

Today was yet another entertain class with Doc Chris!

First class started off with court. Each person that missed class on St. Patty's day was interrogated in front of the class by Doc Chris. Unfortunately, I was one of the people to skip class on Thursday but it wasn't too bad. I plead guilty and was let off! PHEW Of course, sight sound and motion was used in the process and Doc Chris interrogated us while video recording us at the same time. To put an even bigger effect on the court, "Law and Order" music played in the background.

Next a student posted a video from YouTube..

We recorded sight, sound and motion for this as well on our class Facebook page.

Then we had a QUIZ! Luckily, as students in Doc Chris' class, the quiz was unique and entertaining at the same time. We simply had to record sight, sound and motion for three different things presented by Doc Chris...

Sight Quiz:
First item: a rectangular gray box with upside down letters on the front. a black circle is also in the front with a blue light coming through it. it is hanging from the ceiling by a black thin object. there is a black vent on the side and the bottom has different buttons and letters.
*this is a projector handing down for the ceiling

Second item: a large white/greyish box with two drawers on the bottom. the bottom drawer is slightly larger than the one above it. there is a large section above it but it does not appear to be a drawer. there is letters on it. the drawers on the bottom have handles.
*this is a printer

Sound Quiz:
trombones, a man singing, cheering, clapping, drums, background singers, jazz instruments, piano, saxaphone. the chorus consists of him saying "i feel good" and there is a nice beat. music is played by itself without the man singing and he comes in at the end. The music is fast paced and upbeat.

Motion Quiz: (SO EMBARRASSING)
- leaning backwards, rubbing his head, moving body like he doesn't have a backbone
- walking sideways and dancing, skipping
- she's walking forward and touching her hair as if walking down a runway
- he's touching his head and moving his hands to the back of his head
- he's walking foward while leaning backward
- she's walking forward as if she's swimming and doing the frontstroke with her arms
- he's rolling his arms and dancing backwards
- he's moving forward and backwards by swinging his arms
- they are kicking their legs to the side and jumping
- doc Chris is moving his legs slowly and then he goes into a squat and jumps

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods' Interview with Jimmel Fallon

Sight:

Two men in nice suits appear to be engaged in conversation. One is light skinned and is sitting behind a desk. The other man is dark skinned and sitting in a blue chair. They are both smiling and speaking to one another. In the background there is a night city skyline seen through a window. The scene focuses on a rectangular small object and then the scene focuses on the two men again. The scene shifts and the dark skinned man is standing in a red shirt and the white skinned man is wearing a grey and white striped shirt. The white skinned man is jumping up and down and putting his hand in the air. He is smiling and appears to be yelling. He then is shown eating food and smiling. The scene shifts back to the two men engaging in conversation and a blonde woman appears to the right of the man in the blue chair. She appears to speak and then the men continue their conversation. The clip ends with the two men shaking hands.

Sound:

Two men are having a conversation with a neutral volume. Throughout the clip, people in the background clap, cheer and laugh at what the men are saying to each other. Jokes are told that the people in the background find very funny. The sound changes to an edited, live-sounding atmosphere and a man is cheering. The two men with the quieter background are heard again and they continue their conversation while people in the background cheer and laugh.

Motion:

The two men are pretty still except for the movement in their arms and hands. Their heads turn slightly and they move when they laugh or smile. The man in the chair keeps his leg grossed while the man in the desk is leaning over towards the man in the chair. At the end of the clip, they reach over to each other and shake hands.

Class Reflection 3/3/11

The class before spring break I had to go home early and miss one of the best classes yet! :( Doc Chris got everyone food from Panera Bread and class was held in the area of Starbucks in the College Center.

The class talked extensively about Charlie Sheen and his infamous interview on CBS. Of course, along with the rest of the country, I have seen it and I'm very confused as to what is going on in this man's head. The video is very hard to follow and to me, Charlie doesn't seem to be making a lot of sense. He's smoking a cigarette while being interviewed but fortunately he does claim he is clean and not doing any drugs. I do believe he's sober and clean but his behavior was very interesting. He kept moving his body and making strange claims. He says he's not crazy but passionate and that he's too smart to die from drugs. To me, this is a very far fetched statement and I hope he knows what he's doing! I wish the best for him to get better.

Until next time..!

Class Reflection 2/24/11

Class today didn't have the usual exciting and enticing atmosphere. Unfortunately, Doc Chris had to refer to the book to get some information across to the class. In the beginning of class he checked to make sure everyone had theirs and thankfully I had mine! Good thing I didn't get put on trial again.. that's never fun!

Personally I think the book is pretty boring. It's not in color, where an entire chapter is dedicated specifically to color! It's hard to understand the images presented when they are in black and white. For as expensive as it is, I think it should at least provide that!

Regardless, Doc Chris tried to make it as entertaining as possible which was VERY helpful! He had volunteers come up to front of the room to help him demonstrate different lighting. I was one of the lucky students to be able to participate and he shined an iPhone on my face to show how from different perspectives, light will show.

Overall, the class wasn't as exciting as usual but it wasn't TOO bad. Glad the book work is over for today and can't wait for excitement next class!

Class Reflection 2/17/11

Unfortunately, I was too sick to make it to class today and from what I hear, I missed a pretty entertaining class. The class talked about the Grammys with Doc Chris and some of the featured music performances of the night. Justin Bieber and Jayden Smith's performance of "Never Say Never" was discussed, and personally I love the combination of the two artists! I definitely have Bieber Fever and I always love to see him perform and listen to him sing. He's really talented for someone so young and his performance with Jayden was incredible. The two were adorable together and put on a great show.

Also discussed in class was the performance by Rihanna, Eminem, and Dr. Dre. I was excited to hear that the class talked about this performance because that was the video on YouTube I chose to blog about for homework last week! I loved the combination and I was so pleased to see such a GREAT comeback by Eminem. I'm a huge fan!

Ordinary, Every-Day Sounds

(COMING SOON!)

Eminem at the 2011 Grammys

Eminem
Recovery
Performance at the 2011 Grammys

Eminem has always been my favorite rapper and his lyrics are real and honest. At times there is humor, but for the most part the lyrics are harsh and consist of a various amount of emotion. I think Eminem's rapping and lyrics are brilliant and inspiring. This however, can be said for a lot of rappers and singers. What makes Eminem different from other artists is his passion and energy. Along with rapping, he incorporates melody and music into his lyrics. He enunciates certain words and bends them to make the words rhyme and fit together. He is honest and harsh at the same time which is why he is such a unique artist.

He has produced many amazing albums and songs which have all been very popular in the music industry. His most recent album is Recovery. As his seventh studio album, it was released in 2010. It features songs such as "Not Afraid," and "Love The Way You Lie." Over three million copies have been sold and the songs are still popular on the radio.

During his performances, he is exhilarating to watch. During the 2011 Grammys, his performance was exceptional. He first performed with Rihanna and performed "Love The Way You Lie" (Part two.) There was great intensity in this performance and it was an incredible comeback for his career. His stage presence was great and the crowd went wild once he began to rap. After this song was over, he performed the song "I Need A Doctor" with Skylar Grey and Dr. Dre. This was another stunning performance which I will remember as one of the best Grammy performances I have ever seen.

The Grammys was an amazing milestone for Eminem. He has overcome so many obstacles and has pulled through to be greater than ever. He was nominated for 10 awards and won the Grammy award, "Best Rap Album."

I admit, I am not a huge fan of rap. On my iTunes, rap is definitely not my "go-to," but as long as I can remember, I have always been a very big fan of Eminem. Ever since I heard the song "The Real Slim Shady" in 2000, I have been hooked to his music and have followed his work since. When I listen to his songs, I relate to him and understand who he is as an artist and a person.

Class Reflection 2/10/11

Today, as promised, we've had an "abbreviated" class and got to leave an hour and a half early. That's always a good feeling! Our focus in class today was VOLCANISM. Our blogs were evaluated by Doc Chris and he critiqued each blog. For every blog, he made clear that we need to emphasize and concentrate on the volcanism approach. That's something I feel I'm progressing on, but my past blogs definitely need to be edited and fixed. Overall, I feel I've grasped the concept more better than ever today and I'm confident my next blog will be better than ever!

I love how the class is directed by Doc Chris because although we have freedom to express ourselves as we please, there is structure. Facebook is really helpful to follow throughout the class because it is always recorded what the next assignment is.

I'm once again excited for our next homework assignment.. to watch the GRAMMYS! Last week we had to watch the Super bowl for commercials which was, of course, the most enjoyable homework I had that week. I'm sure this week will be just as fun and entertaining. I'm not sure which Grammy nominee I'm going to pick but I definitely want to pick one that I LOVE and enjoy listening to! Can't wait :-) !

Favorite Song!

"Need You Now"
by Lady Antebellum

One of my favorite songs recently is “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum. I love everything about it and it never gets old for me! Lady Antebellum is a country music group consisting of three singers: Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott. I normally am not a listener of country music but for some reason I am really intrigued and interested in this group. I like how there are different voices contributing to one sound and the blend is a very attractive. I like how the woman’s voice is contrasted with the men’s, but their voices mix and work together.

I like the instruments used in the song, especially the piano. The song begins and ends with keys of the piano and I find the simplicity of this beautiful. The tune the piano plays is very catchy and is the base of the melody of the song. The woman begins singing and eventually the men join in. Their voices work very well together and I love how the notes go high and low, but with ease. The chorus is very catchy and for me, it is very hard not to enjoy. It always gets stuck in my head and when I actually do listen to the song, all I want to do is belt out the lyrics!  I can listen to "Need You Now" over and over again and I doubt I will ever get sick of it!

Super Bowl 2011

Glee and Chevrolet Commercial

Super Bowl 2011

This year for the 2011 Super Bowl, the hit show Glee and Chevrolet car company teamed up to produce a commercial. The Glee cast performs a singing number for Chevrolet car and they sing the song “See the U.S.A.” They dance along to their own singing and it is a very catchy and attractive advertisement featuring the stars of the show.

The commercial begins on the Glee set in their “choir room” and the characters are in conversation. A commercial discussed is shown and once the song is over, the choir room is shown again.

I like how the producers constructed this commercial because during the entire time, the Glee characters are acting, talking and singing. There is no narration from a Chevrolet spokesperson and it is only the Glee characters representing the car company. It is an interesting, yet effective, way to advertise Chevrolet.

Sight

A room is shown that is appeared to be school classroom. A bunch of kids are laughing, happy and cheering. An older woman with short blonde hair appears with a satisfactory facial expression.

The scene then shifts to a white area with sheets and soft material falling from up above. Many women are dressed very eloquently in white, with perfectly done make-up and hair. A woman is elevated above the rest and she is smiling and happy. She begins to walk, while the other women dance synchronized. A Chevrolet logo is shown in gold on the floor and then a white Chevrolet truck is present. Men and women are dancing and it turns into a dance number that is synchronized and well choreographed. People are thrown in the air and there is also kick-lining. People are hanging in the air and twisting, and confetti is thrown everywhere.

The classroom setting is shown again and a girl looks puzzled. All of the kids in the room stare at her and the woman with short blonde looks angry. She storms out of the room and the kids left in the room look confused and frustrated.

The scene once again shifts to a white Chevrolet truck and a message saying “Chevy Runs Deep.”

Sound

A man’s voice begins the commercial and he is talking as if he is explaining what previously happened on the show "Glee." He says that a woman named Sue told the "Glee club" that the company Chevrolet wants them in a big commercial. A group of kids begin to cheer and yell out of excitement. The narrator says that Sue’s actions will disqualify them from ever competing again. He then says, “that’s what you missed, on Glee.”

The sound then shifts to pleasant music, which sounds like a harp or high keys of a piano. A woman’s voice is heard and she breaks into singing, “See the U.S.A.”  Men and women contribute to the singing.

The music ends and a girl asks a question. A woman responds angrily and a bunch of  kids' voices begin to fight. The commercial ends with an upbeat tune.

Motion

First a bunch of kids are jumping up and down out of excitement and the motion is very positive. A woman stands in front of them very still with a stance of authority.

The scene shifts and the dancing is very eloquent and positive. There are elegant moves by dancers in the scene. This motion is all over the room because people are hanging in the air and dancing on the floor as well.

The scene shifts again back to the kids and their motion is very stiff and negative.

Sight

The commercial begins with a couple strolling around a pool at moonlight. It is a romantic setting most likely at a vacation resort or hotel. The couple is very flirty and touching each other frequently. Their facial expressions are happy and pleasant and they are enjoying each other’s company. After conversing, they dive into the pool together and all of their clothes are shown being left on the pool deck. They begin to tread water and talk and then the scene submerges under the surface of the water. A party is shown under the pool through a window and there are many people dancing and jumping around. They are laughing and having a good time. They then begin to notice the naked couple through the window and point at them. They are all drinking from Bud Light beer bottles and the scene then changes. One beer bottle is shown splashing up from water and the label from the cap is visible. The scene shifts once again to the couple and their facial expressions turn to confused and puzzled. Finally, the commercial ends to the party taking pictures of the naked couple through the window.

Sound

The sound first heard in the commercial is a band playing or some type of tropical music. They couple begins to converse and the girl asks the boy to go for a swim. He responds that he doesn’t have a bathing suit and she says she doesn’t either. Next, the splashing from their dive is heard when they land in the pool. They begin to breathe heavily and talk about the moon. The sound then shifts from the couple to a party where people are yelling, laughing and cheering. They yell “Bud Light!” and then the narrator of the commercial begins to talk saying to “make it a Bud Light.” There is then a sound of rippling water with background noise of yelling and a party.

Motion

At first in the commercial, the motion is very slow-paced. The couple is walking slow and their motions are towards to each other and their body language is open to the other. They then lunge into the pool and their bodies are treading in the water. The people at the party are dancing and jumping with a positive energy.
